Here will be some stories about other pets and their owners:

Oscar the Grouch

I am a collector or was a collector of aquarium fish. One of my favorite fish that I have ever had was an Oscar I named Psycho. A lot of people say fish don’t have personality, but I disagree. I have never had more fun with fish than with my oscar. Those of you who don’t know what an oscar is, it is a reddish/ orange colored fish than can grow to be about a foot in length. And mine was just that with a temper to match.

One day I got Psycho a gift. I bought him a larger aquarium. Now he could enjoy more room to run (or swim). Also, to match his disposition, I got black rocks and some small decorative human skulls and a larger medium skull. I didn’t realize though, the larger of the skulls that I put into the aquarium glowed in the dark. So when you turned off the lights, all you saw was the skull. Really cool!

I finally showed Psycho to his new home. I could tell by the look on his face and smile that he loved it, skulls and all. He swam like there was no tomorrow. I was pleased as well. It really looked good.

Well it was time to retire for the night. I said goodnight to Psycho and turned out the lights and went to bed. All of a sudden I could hear what sounded like somebody digging in small rocks and then the clang of glass. I lay there listening and wondering what it was. I was living in an apartment with a roommate so I put the fish in my bedroom. After a few minutes of this clanging and scooping of rocks, I finally turned over to see what was making that noise. I looked at the fish tank and all I could see was a glow in the dark and a skull bouncing around the bottom of the aquarium and smacking the side of the aquarium walls.

I got up and turned on my light to see what Psycho was doing. As I turned on the light I saw the fish pushing and tossing the skull, but when the lights went on he stopped and didn’t mess with the skull anymore. But when I turned out the lights he was back at it. I had to finally take the skull out because I wasn’t getting any sleep. I realized the fish didn’t like the glowing skull. I guess it scared him or he didn’t like it looking at him while he was trying to sleep.

Smoked Guinea Pig

Our elementary school had a program of allowing children to take home the classroom pets over holidays and long weekends. On this one occasion our daughter had been given the classroom guinea pig for an extended period. My wife was home alone and thought that she would do the guinea pig a favor by setting it out in the backyard on the grass. She set the cage with the little critter in it out in the shade and then forgot about it for a while. When she did remember it was after a few hours. During that time the shade had moved, leaving the petite pig exposed to the direct sunlight. The day was pretty warm and when she remembered about the guinea pig, she discovered that it was not moving. Not sure what to do, she tried splashing some water on the poor thing to see if that would revive it, but to no avail. About this time the kids started showing up and tried their best to revive it, but still no luck. Finally, our daughter, from whose class the guinea pig came, finally showed up. Seeing everyone in the backyard with the guinea pig, she rushed up and wanted to "play with it". Of course, she was pretty upset to find the guinea pig pretty much stiff as a board.

All right, that was how I remembered the story. Now, the rest of the story. After posting this, my children started a barrage of e-mail with corrections:

The guinea pigs were ours, not the schools, and their names were "Dolly Parton" and "Elizabeth Taylor". The classroom pet was a rat, named "Snowball", but that is another story. My wife (MaryLou) asked Rachel, our second oldest daughter, to put the guinea pigs outside so that they could get some fresh air. Stephanie, our oldest daughter, discovered them in their overheated condition. She, Rachel and MaryLou tried to revive the poor pigs by pouring water on them. Then Allison came home and wanted to play with the guinea pigs, only to discover that they were decidedly deceased.
Thanks for the update.
